Drilling Well Control Courses

This program is intended for personnel in key well control positions on drilling installations, as well as those in onshore roles. Candidates will undergo an IWCF-accredited training course, delivered in line with the IWCF syllabus, to fully prepare them for their assessment.

Level 3

Designed for personnel in any role responsible for initiating a well shut-in (equivalent to the former Driller Level).

Duration Breakdown:
  • Surface Equipment: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Surface Principles and Procedures: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Combined Surface and Subsea Equipment: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Combined Surface and Subsea Principles and Procedures: 2 hours 15 minutes

Level 4

Tailored for Well Site Supervisors (equivalent to the former Supervisor Level).

Duration Breakdown:
  • Surface Equipment: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Surface Principles and Procedures: 2 hours 45 minutes
  • Combined Surface and Subsea Equipment: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Combined Surface and Subsea Principles and Procedures: 2 hours 45 minutes

Candidates may choose to undertake training in either Surface BOP operations or Combined Surface and Subsea operations, depending on their operational requirements.

Practical Assessment:

Candidates enrolled in Level 3 or Level 4 courses are also required to complete a practical assessment. This is typically carried out in pairs, comprising one driller-level and one supervisor-level candidate.

Assessment Objectives:

Candidates must be able to:

  • Prepare the rig for drilling operations
  • Identify a drilling break and detect a positive kick
  • Execute a shut-in promptly using the correct procedure
  • Complete the kill sheet and carry out a well kill using either the Wait & Weight or Driller's Method
  • Bring the pump up to the required kill speed while maintaining constant bottom hole pressure
  • Operate the remote choke, adjusting as needed in accordance with the time delay to ensure constant bottom hole pressure
  • Successfully complete the well kill operation
